KOIN: Nonprofit to mark 40-year anniversary of Chornobyl disaster with free benefit concert
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Ukrainian folk artists are offering a rare opportunity to witness centuries-old music traditions live on the stage.
The Portland area-based nonprofit DAWN Inc. is hosting “Chornobyl: A Song Never Silenced” on Friday, April 17, at Portland State University’s Lincoln Hall.
The free concert commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, a moment that forced entire communities across the region in Ukraine to abandon their homes.
Inna Kovtun, director of health, equity and culture at DAWN, joined us on AM Extra to tell us what audiences can expect at the concert and how the folk songs will honor those affected by the nuclear disaster.
