Ukraine is a sovereign country with its own history, culture, traditions, and values. It was illegally invaded by russia* on February 24th, 2022, putting the world in danger. There is a long history of colonialism and aggression by russia* towards Ukraine that has had a deep impact on the Ukrainian people, causing intergenerational trauma, displacement, and destruction of Ukrainian heritage.

How the war in Ukraine impacts the world:

• Known as the world’s breadbasket, Ukraine produces almost half of the world’s sunflower oil
• Ukraine accounts for 15% of global trade in corn
• Ukraine accounts for 10% of global wheat trade
• The war severely impacts countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe that rely on Ukrainian exports, and contributes to the rise in global food prices and shortages
• The war worsens to the world’s eco-crisis by destroying arid land, and polluting air, land, and water.
• This war puts the world at risk for a nuclear disaster if Europe’s largest nuclear plant in Ukraine is damaged

* Spelling russia with a lowercase r has been adopted by many, including DAWN, in protest not only of the nation’s current regime but of its historic appropriation for its name that of Rus’ land, or Kyivan Rus, a medieval state centered in Kyiv and what is modern Ukraine, and not the Muscovite state.
